Fall in love with WISHBONES by Virginia MacGregor, a novel especially perfect for a Mother-Daughter Book Club!
From the Author:
One of my fondest childhood memories is sneaking into to my mother’s big double bed, choosing a book together, and taking it in turns to read aloud to each other.
There was something magical about sharing a story rather than just reading it on my own. I still remember the novels we read together more vividly than just about any other books I read at that time. When we got to good bits we would stop and discuss them; we would gasp at the exciting bits, grabbing our hands in anticipation of what would come next; we would cry at the sad bits and, as we turned the last page, we would mourn having to say goodbye to the characters we had grown to love.
Those special reading sessions developed my love of reading but also helped me to talk about some of the issues raised by the stories we shared: friendship, falling in love, loss and much more besides.
Now that I am a writer of both adult and young adult fiction I would be delighted to know that there were some mothers and daughters out there sharing my stories. That’s how I came up with the concept of a mother and daughter book club for Wishbones.
My idea is that, not only will mothers and daughters share the experience of reading Wishbones with each other, but that they will take this one step further and get together with other mothers and daughters who have also read the book and share their thoughts on the novel.
Because Wishbones is a contemporary novel which tackles some important issues facing young people today, it’s bound to stimulate some interesting discussion. I’ve written some reading group questions, which you might like to turn to for ideas.
What’s more, at the heart of Wishbones lies the complex and beautiful relationship between fourteen-year-old Feather Tucker and her mother, Jo: I hope that by reading about these two characters, mothers and daughters will come to a deeper understanding of their own relationship.
I would be delighted to Skype in for a Q&A or, if you happen to live near Concord, NH, to pop in for the meeting – you can contact me through my website: www.virginiamacgregor.com.
I hope that you enjoy reading and sharing Wishbones.
