Here is a great story about how book clubs are matching up with teachers in their communities to help donate books to classrooms. As you know, not all school districts are able to provide schools with the books that they need, and teachers often pay for books out of their own pockets to make sure they have what they need to teach. Kirkwood, MO resident Terry Sibbitts' book club adopted their first classroom in 2002 and when more clubs wanted to help, she formed the nonprofit group Books to Build On, which helps to match book clubs to classrooms in the St. Louis area. This week the group held a Read & Rave event featuring four local Missouri authors and a portion of the proceeds benefited Books to Build On.
I think this would be a great initiative for all our book clubs to take on, especially as the new school year is beginning. Why not contact your local Board of Ed, or your child's school to let them know you'd like to help? You can read about the steps that Books to Build On has created for donating at their website.
