We visited my daughter at sleepaway camp today, which made me think not only of Paula Danziger's classic There's a Bat in Bunk Five but of another series I loved as a girl (even more obscure than my Betsy-Tacy obsession) -- the Sal Fisher books by Lillian S. Gardner, specifically Sal Fisher at Girl Scout Camp. I devoured books about camp when I was young, though I confess I
was too much of a scaredy cat to actually go to sleepaway camp myself, plus no one where I grew up really went away to camp. I now regret it, especially when I see how much fun my daughter has, the friendships that she establishes and how much more grown up and independent she is each year upon her return. I shall now dig out my beyond tattered copy of Sal Fisher and retire with it to bed, imagining instead that I'm on a bunk in a cabin in the woods, reading by flashlight after "lights out."
And for those who are interested, the above link will bring you to a current EBay auction for Sal Fisher, currently very reasonably priced at 99 cents.
