My book group met last night to discuss Guernsey, and it was perhaps the only unanimously liked book we've read all year! Everyone enjoyed it so much, and marvelled at how much humor and charm could be conveyed in a story that also contained so much horror and sadness. The book is such an accomplishment and all the characters feel like your friends by the end. We also voted on our next selection and our choices were:
Life of Pi by Yann Martel
Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali
American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld
The Tiny One by Eliza Minot
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz We didn't even need two rounds of voting this time, as the initial round went overwhelmingly for Infidel. I'm looking forward to reading this memoir of Ayaan Hiris Ali, from her traditional Muslim upbringing in Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Kenya to her intellectual awakening and activism in the Netherlands, to her current life under armed guard in the West.
