Announcing a New Classics Book Club: English 101 Hosted by The Olive Reader and The Roaring Twenties!

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith Those crazy kids Erica and Kayleigh, here in the marketing departments of Harper Perennial and Harper Library, who write the fabulous Olive Reader and Roaring Twenties blogs have gotten together and are starting a Harper Perennial Classics Book Club to re-read-or perhaps read for the first time-the classics! Their first selection for English 101, as they're calling their book club, is A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith, and if you head on over to the Olive Reader, you can win a copy to read along with them! I, ahem, have actually never read this one and I know it's a HUGE gap in my cultural literacy so I think I'll be joining in. I'm trying to convince the ladies that they should also do a radio show discussion of the book on Book Club Girl on Air - if you think that's a good idea, let me, or them, know!

I love A Tree Grows In Brooklyn. It has been a favorite of everyone in my family every since my Dad bought a copy at a used book store when I was a kid. He and my Mom bought my sister and I our own copies. One of the best parts about being a high school English teacher was getting to share this book with my students. I think a radio show about this book would be excellent!

They should definitely do a radio show. I would love to hear them chat about it. Don't worry Jennifer, I actually read this one and other than remembering that I liked it, I don't remember much of anything else. This will be as good as reading it the first time.

I'd enjoy hearing a radio show from them. And this is so weird...just yesterday I was commenting to a friend that there are so many 'classics' that I haven't read. Now's my chance to fill that void in my reading lists! This book is on my shelf, I'll be getting it down & dusted off.

Who is Book Club Girl?

  • Book Club Girl is: a member of a book club and an avid reader who spent most of her childhood immersed in a book, an English major who considered library school until she realized it was all about computers, so turned to publishing, where she now works (but she vows to talk about books from all over and not to simply flog those from her own house). She was single, lived in the city, met a man, moved to the 'burbs, and is now a wife, a stepmother, a mother, and in her spare time, a fledgling blogger dedicated to sharing great books, news and tips with book club girls everywhere.

My Review Policy

  • I review fiction and nonfiction that is appropriate for book clubs. This includes literary and some women's commercial fiction as well as memoir and narrative nonfiction. I do not review self-help, thrillers, mysteries, horror, or fantasy. I have a fondness for YA literature and while the blog is not devoted to it (well, except for my obsession with the Betsy-Tacy series), I will occasionally review some YA books.
