In NYC? Support an Independent Bookstore this Week. Not in NYC? Support One Wherever You Live!

IndependentBookstoreWeekNYC Tomorrow marks the start of the First Independent Bookstore Week in NYC, designed to celebrate and support the independent booksellers of the city, stores that help to make New York the great city that it is. I should be in NYC later this evening, and maybe I'll have time to stop by Word, the awesome bookstore in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, or the new Greenlight Bookstore in Fort Greene. Later this week, I'll visit McNally Jackson in downtown Manhattan, but until then, I'll do my part by shopping at my local bookstore here in Maplewood, NJ, Words, which is still relatively new to our town. Maybe I'll pick up a book for the 5th birthday party my son was just invited to, or a few for my baby girl who turns one in just a few weeks. I'm also starting a mental list of the books I need to get for friends and family for Christmas this year. So shop at your local independent, and in so doing, support your community!

I try to support many indi-bookstores. They are in need of business and usually have great service. There are some truly awesome ones here in Atlanta like Bound to be Read Books, Medu Books, Shrine of the Black Madonna, and many more!

Who is Book Club Girl?

  • Book Club Girl is: a member of a book club and an avid reader who spent most of her childhood immersed in a book, an English major who considered library school until she realized it was all about computers, so turned to publishing, where she now works (but she vows to talk about books from all over and not to simply flog those from her own house). She was single, lived in the city, met a man, moved to the 'burbs, and is now a wife, a stepmother, a mother, and in her spare time, a fledgling blogger dedicated to sharing great books, news and tips with book club girls everywhere.

My Review Policy

  • I review fiction and nonfiction that is appropriate for book clubs. This includes literary and some women's commercial fiction as well as memoir and narrative nonfiction. I do not review self-help, thrillers, mysteries, horror, or fantasy. I have a fondness for YA literature and while the blog is not devoted to it (well, except for my obsession with the Betsy-Tacy series), I will occasionally review some YA books.
