The circus is coming to town, and according to the New York Times, it's recession-proof as well! We have a wonderful travelling circus that comes to our town each Fourth of July, but this may be the year that I treat my son to the real deal, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, opening in Madison Square Garden today! In honor of the circus, today I'm recommending Bruce Feiler's Under the Big Top, the chronicle of the year he spent working as a circus clown, fulfilling every child's fantasy of running off to join the circus. Dip in, you won't be sorry.

Oh, cool suggestion! As someone who DID run off and join the circus (seriously) I love reading books dealing with the subject. Maybe one day I'll write my own!

I once thought about joining the circus, but then I saw where the circus folk lived (this was 25 years ago), and I thought, hmmmmm, I think I will just dream of joining the circus and riding horses.

I love the "idea" of a circus but the clowns, to this day, scare the hell out of me.
