There seem to be an alarming number of literary landmarks in danger of being closed down. First there was Edith Wharton's The Mount and now the Mark Twain House and Museum is in financial trouble and needs donations to remain open. Several authors have banded together to hold a fundraising night of readings on September 23rd at the Museum. If you're in the Hartford, CT area, come out to hear Tasha Alexander, David Gates, Phillip Lopate, Tom Perrotta, Arthur Phillips, Stewart O'Nan, Amy McKinnon, Kristy Kiernan, Robert Hicks, Andy Carroll, Jon Clinch and Philip Beard read in support of the literary
legend's home. For more details on the event, go here. To donate to the museum and find out more, go here. And the suggestion I offered up when I wrote about Wharton's home still applies -- why not choose a Twain classic to read in book group next month, and have everyone in your group bring $10-20 to donate. Multiplied times the number in your group and that could be a nice donation!

Thanks for letting us know about this. I grew up in Connecticut and visited Twain's house in middle school. It was a great experience and one I thought I'd share with my son in a few years. I really hope they're able to keep it open.

It would be such a shame to close his home. People would loose a bit of history. I'll tell my book readers so we can be a part of helping. Thanks for passing this along.
