Those of you who listened to my show last week with Ann Patchett know that my next show will feature DeLaune Michel, author of the novel The Safety of Secrets. The novel tells the story of Fiona and Patricia, who meet in first grade and form a friendship that will last into adulthood. Years later, when Fiona is married and Patricia a famous actress, a secret from their past emerges and threatens to destroy the bond that has kept them close for so many years. Author Dani Shapiro said of The Safety of Secrets: "Written with tremendous narrative velocity, The Safety of Secrets is almost impossible to put down. DeLauné Michel has crafted a story that manages to be several things at once: a hilarious inside look at Hollywood, a nuanced portrait of a friendship and its secrets, and a moving testament to the powerful effects of a destructive mother."
I can't wait for this show, not only is DeLaune a wonderful writer, she also runs a series of author events in NYC called Spoken Interludes so I know our conversation will be terrific. Check out DeLaune's website and her blog, an interview with her about the novel, and the reading group guide. The first 15 people to comment on this post that they'd like to participate in the show with DeLaune on Wednesday, October 22nd at 7 pm EST will receive a free copy of The Safety of Secrets. Set a reminder for the show here.
