Nancy Pearl, America's favorite librarian, late of the Seattle Public Library system and author of Book Lust and More Book Lust , has a new collection out, full of her recommendations of the best books for kids and teens, appropriately titled Book Crush. If you're in a YA book club, or one that sometimes leans to YA, or you have kids, this is a great guide. I was so pleased to see my own favorites, including the Betsy-Tacy series (I believe my sister and I were the only ones to check them out of our local library, and we did so on a regular basis and I still read them to this day as the ultimate comfort reading). Other books Nancy and I both crush on: The All of-a-Kind-Family series, Misty of Chincoteague, Meet the Austins (and the entire series about the Austins) by Madeline L'Engle, Gone-away Lake (illustrated by my favorite illustrators, Beth and Joe Krush) and Anastasia Krupnik.
Pearl opines regularly on her favorite books on NPR (listen to yesterday's broadcast here). She has also inspired not one, but two librarian action figures -- the regular and the deluxe. Maybe one day there will be a Book Club Girl action figure to match... a girl can dream.
